Are We Steamrolling to Sharia?

In a move that has sparked widespread controversy, the Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, is proposing the establishment of an Islamophobia Council. The official narrative suggests that this initiative is intended to combat discrimination against Muslims, ensuring they are better protected from prejudice and hate crimes. However, a closer look at the political landscape suggests a far more complex and concerning reality.
The establishment of this council, essentially a government task force, is not about protecting British Muslims from discrimination. Rather, I suspect it, and the implementation of Islamophobia legislation that will likely follow, will instead increase animosity towards Muslims.
To get to the truth we must look elsewhere and examine how the Labour Party is involved in an internal struggle to retain control over the increasingly fragmented Muslim bloc vote, the growing influence of Islamist factions within the communities where Labour hold power, and the broader agenda to suppress dissenting voices under the guise of combating hate speech.
In this latest Red Wall and the Rabble article, I will detail what I believe are the primary reasons behind the formation of this council and the potentially dire consequences for freedom of speech and democratic integrity in the UK. Appeasement and Power: Why Labour Is Surrendering to Islamist Demands
1. The Justification to Safeguard Muslims Does Not Follow Through with the Facts
One of the primary justifications for the Islamophobia Council is the claim that British Muslims are facing an unparalleled level of discrimination that requires urgent government intervention. However, evidence does not support this narrative.
In towns and cities across the UK, instances of mosques being burned down, widespread anti-Muslim violence, or systematic discrimination against Muslims on a scale that justifies a separate legal framework are virtually non-existent. While individual cases of prejudice may occur, they are neither widespread nor beyond the scope of existing hate crime legislation.
Meanwhile, there is an increasing level of hostility towards the white working-class population from within certain segments of the Muslim community, as seen in the grooming gang scandals and politically motivated intimidation tactics. Despite this, the government has chosen to frame the debate solely around the victimhood of Muslims, ignoring the broader reality on the ground - that there are deep rooted prejudices within the UK Muslim community that need to be tackled.
By pushing forward with this initiative, Labour is not responding to an urgent crisis but rather manufacturing a problem to justify its broader political goals. This council, therefore, is not about protection - it is about control.
For decades, the Labour Party has relied on a consistent and unified Muslim voting bloc in key constituencies. This support base was traditionally controlled by influential community leaders and business cartels who directed votes in exchange for political favours. However, this once-stable system is now facing an existential crisis.
A significant faction within the Muslim community is increasingly aligning with Islamist separatist movements, viewing Labour as insufficiently committed to their ideological and religious demands. This split has resulted in the rise of independent Islamist candidates who openly challenge Labour’s authority in areas with high Muslim populations. To counter this, Labour has resorted to appeasement tactics, including the establishment of the Islamophobia Council, as a desperate measure to prevent further defections from its voter base.
Angela Rayner and Labour leadership have actively courted key figures in Muslim-majority wards, engaging in targeted outreach efforts designed to signal their loyalty to the community. However, this has not been enough, as evidenced by the formation of alternative political movements such as the Oldham Group, a party dominated by Pakistani Muslim councillors who advocate for policies prioritising Islamic identity over traditional Labour values.
2. Suppressing Criticism, Restricting Free Speech and Introducing De Facto Blasphemy Laws
Another major concern is the potential erosion of free speech. The definition of Islamophobia proposed by the Labour-backed All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) states that it is "a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness." This vague and overly broad definition raises significant red flags, as it could be weaponised to stifle legitimate criticism of Islam as a religion and any political ideology associated with it.
Critics, including former Attorney General Dominic Grieve, have warned that such a definition risks functioning as a de facto blasphemy law, criminalising discussions about issues such as radical Islam, grooming gang scandals, and the application of Sharia law within the UK.
Peter Whittle from the New Culture Forum has gone further, describing the Islamophobia Council as a "genuine and real attack" on free speech, arguing that Labour's push for such a body reflects an Orwellian attempt to censor debate and punish those who refuse to conform to a state-approved narrative.
Moreover, the Labour Party’s hypocrisy on free speech is glaring. While it vocally defends the right to mock Christianity and other faiths, its push for an Islamophobia Council suggests an intention to create a protected status for Islam, making any critique of the religion or its political manifestations increasingly dangerous.
Further evidence of this political manoeuvring was seen in Parliament when Labour MP Tahir Ali asked the Prime Minister whether the government would introduce measures to prohibit the desecration of religious texts, including the Quran. This direct appeal to implement what would effectively amount to a blasphemy law underscores the broader strategy at play - restricting free speech under the guise of combating Islamophobia.
3. Escalation of Islamist Influence in British Politics
Beyond mere electoral politics, the establishment of an Islamophobia Council aligns with a broader, more troubling trend - the gradual normalisation of Islamist influence in British governance. Over the past decade, Islamist political actors have become more emboldened, using democratic processes to further their own agenda while simultaneously rejecting key democratic principles. The former Prime Minister , Liz Truss, has made reference to a bloc of Islamist MPs now sitting in Parliament itself.
At a more local level, this reality was starkly illustrated by the resignation of three Oldham councillors from the Conservative Party, citing the UK government’s support for Israel as their reason for breaking ranks. Their public announcement, delivered in a manner reminiscent of jihadist propaganda videos, showcased the degree to which Islamist separatism has infiltrated local governance.
By implementing an Islamophobia Council, intentionally or otherwise, Labour is tacitly empowering these factions, granting them a greater platform to shape policy and dictate what can and cannot be discussed in the public sphere. This will further embolden Islamist groups who already seek to impose elements of Sharia law in segregated enclaves across the UK.

The establishment of an Islamophobia Council is not an innocent attempt to combat prejudice - it is a strategic move by Labour to maintain political control, silence criticism, and empower Islamist factions.
This council isn't about protecting Muslims. It's about protecting power. It's about silencing dissent. Most dangerously, it's about appeasement of a voter base that it relies on to keep hold of power in towns and cities across the country. Does anyone really believe that those that control the bloc vote will be satisfied with the latest surrender?
If we don't speak up now, we'll be teaching our children why silence was the wrong choice. If allowed to proceed, it will have far-reaching consequences for free speech, social cohesion, and national security. Now, more than ever, it is imperative for citizens across the political spectrum to oppose this dangerous initiative. Freedom of speech must remain non-negotiable, and the British public must not allow their government to impose ideological restrictions that benefit only those who seek to undermine democratic values from within.
If we do not act now, we risk steamrolling into a reality where criticism of Islam is forbidden, political opposition is crushed, and the fundamental rights of all British citizens are permanently compromised. The time to speak out is now.
