Bradford Just Blocked a Grooming Gangs Inquiry - Here's Why That Matters

The truth is hard to face.

But what Bradford's Labour councillors just did is even harder to stomach: They blocked an investigation into child sexual exploitation in their own district. Why? Because they're afraid of becoming "the next Rotherham."

Let that sink in: They're more worried about their city's reputation than uncovering the truth about grooming gangs.

The Decision That Sparked Outrage

Here's what happened:

The Conservative Group proposed a motion. They wanted an independent national inquiry into grooming gangs operating in Bradford. Simple enough, right?

But Labour councillors said no.

Robbie Moore, Conservative MP for Keighley and Ilkley, called it exactly what it is: "shameful." His words cut straight to the bone:

"They are actively blocking further openness and transparency on this horrendous crime which continues to haunt Keighley and the wider Bradford District."

A Pattern of Denial

This isn't just about Bradford.

Professor Alexis Jay, who wrote the explosive 2014 Rotherham report, recently spoke to the Home Affairs Select Committee. Her words expose an ugly truth about local authorities:

"They don't want to be the next Rotherham... there will be a kind of collusion not to commission such reports."

The numbers from Rotherham tell their own story:

  • 1,400 children sexually exploited
  • 16 years of abuse (1997-2013)
  • Countless failures by police, social workers, and politicians

And now Bradford risks the same fate. Or worse!

The Human Cost

The victims aren't just statistics.

One survivor from Bradford lived it. She was sexually abused in 2008 while living in a care home. Social services failed her repeatedly. Her story isn't ancient history - it's a warning about what is still happening today.

A victim who was abused in Bradford calls on the government to order the council to hold an inquiry.

A National Crisis in Plain Sight

Look around the UK:

  • Rochdale: Systematic exploitation
  • Telford: Over 1,000 children abused since the 1980s
  • Oldham: The same dark pattern

Each inquiry reveals the same toxic mix: incompetence, indifference, the fear of being labeled racist and a culture of cover up involving some of the most powerful politicians in the country.

Political Battle Lines

The divide is clear:

  • Labour-led Bradford Council believe that lessons have already been learned
  • A Conservative MP demands independent scrutiny
  • The Labour Government resists national measures

Meanwhile, campaigners keep fighting for transparency. They understand what Bradford's councillors don't: You can't fix a problem by hiding it.

The Stakes Are Clear

Bradford's councillors made a choice:

  • Protect their reputation
  • Or protect their children

They chose reputation.

But here's the truth they're avoiding: The cost isn't measured in political points or public image. It's measured in children's lives.

A National Emergency Demands National Action

The lessons from Rotherham taught us one thing: Local authorities will never investigate themselves.

Bradford just proved it.

They had their chance to do the right thing. They chose reputation over justice -just like dozens of other councils across the UK.

The truth is stark:

  • Local authorities won't act
  • Internal investigations don't work
  • Self-regulation has failed

Only central government can break this cycle.

What's needed isn't just another local inquiry. We need a comprehensive National Inquiry covering Bradford and at least 50 other towns and cities across the UK.

Because here's what Bradford's decision proves: When local authorities are given the choice between truth and cover up, they'll choose cover up every time.

The pattern is clear:

  • Rotherham didn't investigate until forced
  • Telford resisted for decades
  • Oldham covered up their crimes
  • Now Bradford blocks transparency

This isn't just about one city anymore. It's about a national failure that requires a national response. Until the government steps in and forces a National Inquiry, more councils will follow Bradford's lead. More evidence will be buried. More perpetrators will escape justice. And more children will suffer.

The choice is simple:

  • Wait for councils to investigate themselves (they won't)
  • Or demand government intervention now

There's only one real option. The time for half-measures is over. The government must act. The future of our democracy depends on it.

You won’t find me on any news channel in the UK nor featured in the legacy press. For some reason, they seem reluctant to interview me. My name is Raja Miah MBE. I am responsible for leading a six year campaign that blew the lid off how Labour Party politicians were involved in protecting Pakistani Rape Gangs.

In a past life, I advised government on how to safeguard children and protect communities from extremism. Queen Elizabeth II put a medal on my chest for my services to our nation. My mother died before I could clear my name. My daughter screamed in fear as gangsters followed us home and carjacked us in an attempt to silence me.

My family have been targeted and Greater Manchester Police continue to protect those attempting to silence me. My crime? Refusing to look the other way to the gang rape of my town’s children. I don’t know what more I can do to prove my worth. But I do know this: without your help, this fight will end, and they will win.
